Planning a budget-friendly getaway to Europe? Keep reading for reviews on some of the best hostels in Europe!

Staying in hostels is a great way to explore the world on a budget. Hostel dorms (and even private rooms) are typically much cheaper than a hotel. You also get the bonus of the social aspect of hostels – they’re a great way to make new friends whether you’re traveling solo or with a group!

Finding the perfect hostel can be tough. There can be so many options, and while one hostel might have excellent reviews, it might not be the right hostel for you. Some hostels are tailored for travelers who want to party all night long, while others are more laid-back. Choosing the wrong hostel can turn you off from hostels entirely when in reality it could have simply been that you chose a hostel that didn’t quite vibe with your travel style.

Since hotels in many of Europe’s major cities can be a bit on the more expensive side, staying in hostels is a perfect way to make your big Euro-Trip or weekend city breaks while studying abroad more affordable. And budget-friendly doesn’t have to mean sacrificing on comfort – many hostels have amenities that rival those of luxury hotels.

To help you find the perfect hostel to fit you and your trip, I’ve put together this ultimate guide of the best hostels in Europe. In this guide, you can find reviews on the top hostels across Europe, ranging from touristy cities to more off-the-beaten-path destinations.

The best part? These reviews were written by real travelers who have stayed at these hostels! You can trust these reviews to help you find the perfect hostel, no matter your destination.

PS: Don’t forget to pack these hostel essentials for your stay!

Additionally, as I gather more reviews, this post will be updated so that it can serve as a comprehensive guide to the best hostels across Europe. Do you know of an amazing hostel that’s missing from this list? Send me a message and it could get added!

A really lovely hostel that should be on top of any best hostels list is definitely the Hostel Backpackers in Mostar. Not only is the outside of the hostel colorful and fun, but the inside is also a highlight. Here you will feel safe and very welcome. The hostel is a family-run business and guests enjoy the overwhelming hospitality! Also, it is not a party hostel, but it’s still a good place to meet other backpackers and travelers from all over the world.

When booking your stay, you can choose between a dorm or double rooms for private use. Another plus is the cheap prices! Dorm beds are only around €10 in the slow season.

Best Hostels in Bulgaria

Sofia, Bulgaria – Hostel Mostel Sofia

Recommended by Rose Munday from Where Goes Rose?

The best hostel in Sofia, and probably all of Bulgaria, is Hostel Mostel. Once an old coaching inn welcoming weary and hungry travelers, it hasn’t really changed much when you think about it!

Photo by Rose Munday from Where Goes Rose?

Hostel Mostel is a backpackers hostel with comfy rooms, but the best bit is the large dining area perfect for sharing tables and meeting other travelers. A stay includes two free meals a day: a generous buffet breakfast and a dinner. There’s always a pasta, egg, and veggie curry option. They also run group trips daily and a lively bar crawl that departs at 10 PM every night. While it’s a sociable hostel, quiet hours are after 10 PM so those who don’t go on the bar crawl can get some sleep.

Since opening in December 2018, DREAM Hostel in Prague has become one of the city’s most loved hostels. The location is perfect, being just a short 15-minute walk away from Old Town Square.

Additionally, the laid-back hostel also boasts lovely decor, spots to chill out, and a nice kitchen with large fridges. This is ideal for those traveling on a budget who prefer to cook for themselves. Furthermore, the rooms are clean and comfortable, with curtains on each bed for privacy and under bed storage for each guest.

Lastly, the staff at the hostel go above and beyond to help with anything you may need, making it a great place to stay if you are in Prague!

Best Hostels in Denmark

Copenhagen, Denmark – Steel House Copenhagen

Recommended by Melissa from Parenthood and Passports

With an industrial style and modern feel, Steel House Hostel in Copenhagen’s trendy Vesterbro area is great for travelers of all types.

Whether you’re a solo traveler looking to book a single bed in a shared dorm or a family staying in a hostel with kids to save on lodging expenses, Steel House offers a variety of booking options and amenities. You can book a capsule-style bed in either a women’s only or mixed dorm or book a private room. The hostel has a hip bar and café on the first floor that is perfect for mingling with other travelers, as well as a theater room, indoor pool, and fitness center.

But perhaps the best thing about Steel House Hostel is its convenient location near the Central Train Station (Kobenhavn H) and the famous Tivoli Gardens. In fact, the hostel is within walking distance to many of Copenhagen’s main attractions, making it easy to go without a car during your stay.

Copenhagen, Denmark – Generator Copenhagen

Recommended by Annabel from Smudged Postcard

The Generator is in a central location in Copenhagen, a short walk from famous Nyhavn and close to a metro station. Generator Copenhagen features a mix of accommodation options including dorms, private double rooms, and family rooms – some of which have private en-suite facilities.

There’s a decent sized bar and restaurant – breakfast, lunch, and dinner can all be had here. There is also an outdoor space for socializing – this can get quite noisy late into the night so request a room away from here if you’re a light sleeper.

There’s no kitchen for self-catering at the Generator but there’s a supermarket next door where visitors can stock up on food for a picnic lunch.

Far more than just a hostel, Fabrika Tbilisi is considered one of the city’s most important cultural and creative hubs. Located inside a restored Soviet clothing factory, Fabrika is a vast complex of shops, restaurants, cafes, and co-working spaces, with accommodation on the upper floors. The Fabrika Courtyard hosts events throughout the summer, including flea markets and film screenings. Tbilisi’s biggest street art festival takes place in the neighborhood and has seen the building serve as a canvas for dozens of local and international artists over the years.

Fabrika offers both dorms and private suites, making it suitable for singles, couples and families. The industrial-inspired design pays homage to the building’s history while simultaneously showcasing Georgian artists and heritage crafts.

Best Hostels in Germany

Berlin, Germany – St. Christopher’s Inn Berlin Mitte

Recommended by Toti from Italian Trip Abroad

Berlin is a vibrant city, awesome for a quick escape to enjoy the incredible history, the lively art scene and its crazy clubs. The best way to experience Berlin on a weekend is to have central accommodation, which allows you to enjoy the best sightseeing in a short distance.

The St. Christopher’s Inn hostel in Mitte is right in the middle of the lively city center. Staying in this central hostel will allow you to explore everything in a 2-mile range efficiently and fast.

The hostel itself is a great hub of young like-minded travelers, thanks to the amenities that offer you a co-working area, which becomes one of the most trendy bars in Mitte at night. Party, sleep, make new friends, and work at the same place, what more could you want?

The wide range of rooms of the St. Christopher’s Inn is ideal for every adventurer, even for couples in Berlin.

Berlin, Germany – Hüttenpalast

Recommended by Sasha from The Alternative Travel Guide

Hüttenpalast in Berlin is great for solo travelers, as it is quite easy to meet other travelers here. There are many common areas – a terrace with a garden, a chill-out zone, a cafe, and hammocks, where everything is perfect for socializing. At the same time, you will have your own van for privacy. This hostel will also especially appeal to fans of camping.

Hüttenpalast is a crazy project of some friends from Berlin. The idea is very cool and unconventional: urban camping under the roof! It is very Berlin style. To bring this idea to life, the hotel’s creators found an old factory in the Neukolln neighborhood, one of the hipster Berlin districts.  They renovated one of the hangars and turned it into a hotel, inside of which they installed old motor homes, caravans, and trailers.

They call it a hotel, but in fact, it’s more like a hostel: you get some privacy in your own caravan, but you share the space with other guests. Also, there is no noise isolation, so bring earplugs and be ready for noise from other guests. The bathroom is also shared.

All in all, Hüttenpalast is a fantastic place to stay in Berlin with a unique atmosphere.

Athens, Greece – Pella Inn Hostel

Pella Inn Hostel could not be in a better location if you’re wondering where to stay in Athens. Set in the region of Monastiraki, this hostel is surrounded by vibrant bars and bustling restaurants. This part of Athens is full of life day and night. All the main tourist attractions are within easy walking distance so you won’t need to spend a penny on transport.

The location of Pella Inn is excellent, but it is the rooftop bar which really makes this place special. With stunning views of the Acropolis and a relaxed vibe, it is a great place for making new friends. Pella Inn is safe and clean, making it the perfect choice if you’re a solo traveler or if you’re new to staying in hostels.

Sunset view with a group of hostel from nearby Youth Hostel Plakias in Crete, Greece - one of the best hostels in Greece
Photo by Kim from My Global Ways

Plakias Youth Hostel is one of my favorite and most unexpected hostels! Tucked away in a town on the coast, it has excellent facilities, great breakfasts, hammocks, and occasional yoga classes. The area has nothing guidebook worthy, but it is absolutely gorgeous! There are beaches nearby, great restaurants, caves to watch the sunset, and beautiful waterfall hikes.

What really makes the hostel great is the vibe and the people. People come for a few days and stay for a few weeks. Every night, the hostel will organize a group meal. It could be to one of the nearby farm-to-table restaurants or a hostel BBQ. This is a great way to experience Greek food and wine at a discount and meet other travelers. While the hostel is not a party hostel, it is a social hostel and there tends to be a fair amount of drinking. Overall, it’s definitely one of the best hostels in Europe!

Mykonos, Greece – MyCocoon Hostel

Recommended by Nesrine Chebbi from Kevmrc.com

MyCocoon Hostel is the perfect place in the heart of Mykonos if you want to enjoy 5-star facilities and design in a friendly atmosphere, without spending too much money.

As you may already know, Mykonos is all about luxury travels. MyCocoon Hostel has opened in 2017 as the first hostel on the island, making traveling to Mykonos more affordable. So now, you can go island hopping there without going broke!

Located in Chora at the entrance of Mykonos Town, this hostel is perfectly located to enjoy the island’s lively nightlife: you’ll find lots of restaurants, bars, and clubs nearby that you can try with travelers you’ll meet in the hostel.

The hostel itself is incredibly decorated: its beautiful capsule design, all white in the typical Myconian style will make you feel you’re in heaven. There are several rooms and dorms for 2 to 10 people, so you can come by yourself, as a couple or with friends. It also offers awesome facilities, quite unusual for hostels, including a bar and an infinity pool.

Santorini, Greece – Caveland Santorini

Recommended by Alex from Alex Getting Lost

  • Location: Karterados, Post Box 39, Karterados 847 00, Greece (map)
  • Read reviews on TripAdvisor // Book your stay on HostelWorld

Caveland Santorini is more like a really beautiful boutique hotel than a hostel. Situated near the town of Thira, Caveland has a mixture of dorms and private rooms, all of which are located inside some seriously cool 18th century caves. These caves used to hold a winery, and now they make the perfect place to cool off from the scorching Greek sunshine.

One massive selling point of Caveland is its stunning pool, set against a beautiful backdrop of bougainvillea and the slopes of Santorini. Plus, although the general vibe is very chilled, the hostel organizes tons of activities for its guests, including yoga and meals in local tavernas.

Santorini is well-known for being a ‘couples’ destination, and is home to plenty of expensive hotels. But at Caveland Santorini, you can still have a boutique hotel experience at a fraction of the price.

The pods are very high-tech inside with lots of amazing amenities and lighting options, and you can safely lock them from inside and outside with your key card.

Galaxy Pod Hostel is a very chill hostel, where travelers come to rest after a day of exploring the area. The pods give you that all important privacy and peace of mind that you need for a good night’s sleep.

Pisa, Italy – Safestay Pisa

Recommended by Bhushavali from My Travelogue by Bhushavali

I was on a multi-day backpacking trip across Italy and being a vegetarian, I mostly survived on McDonald’s veggie burgers and biscuits. That’s when one fine night I checked into Safestay Pisa (formerly Hostel Pisa). The hostel owner was a vegetarian and the dinner buffet was full of vegetarian options from salads to pizza to pasta to fritters and more. I ate like I hadn’t eaten for days!

This is one of the best hostels in Pisa, not just for its food, but for everything from location to facilities & more. The hostel is located just over 1.5 miles from the Leaning Tower of Pisa which is a leisurely 25-30 minute walk. It’s just a 15 minute walk away from Pisa Airport & 6 minutes from Pisa Centrale railway station. The hostel’s outdoor seating arrangement is quite lively. The rooms are 4-bed dorms with an en suite bathroom – that’s quite a luxury for hostels, especially for its affordable price!

Rome, Italy – Generator Rome

Recommended by Haley from HaleyBlackall.com

Generator Rome is a perfect hostel for female solo travelers as it offers female-only dorms and is great for people looking to connect with other travelers during their trip to Rome.

Located a short walk away from the iconic Colosseum and steps away from the Rome Termini Train Station, Generator Hostel in Italy’s Capital of Rome is one of the best hostels in the world. Centrally situated in a multi-ethnic neighborhood, the hostel boasts a design-forward aesthetic, chill-out cafe, stylish bar, restaurant, and rooftop.

The private rooms are hotel quality, but with a budget price, and come in twin, queen, and king offerings. Meet fellow travelers in the mixed or female-only dorm rooms that come equipped with individual bedside lamps, a personal shelf, a charging station with a USB port, and under-bed lockers.

PRO TIP: Bring your own towel, as the hostel will charge 5 euros for rental.

Rome, Italy – YellowSquare

Recommended by Alina from World of Lina

YellowSquare Hostel in Rome was the first hostel I ever stayed in. My positive experience there was also the reason why I’ve stayed in many other hostels during the last few years. The party hostel is centrally located and only a 5-minute walk from the Roma Termini train station. Besides a communal lounge, there’s also an on-site bar and club where you can have dinner or enjoy a live performance. Every day, you can also join other travelers on tours around the city.

The rooms at the hostel are very big, clean and each has its own bathroom plus toilet. When booking, you can also choose between mixed or female only dorms. You really get a lot for a very small amount of money at YellowSquare!

Best Hostels in the Netherlands

Amsterdam, Netherlands – CityHub Amsterdam

Recommended by Lucile Hernandez Rodriguez from LucileHR.com

My favorite hostel in Europe is CityHub Amsterdam, which will give you hotel services at hostel prices. It has around 50 capsule rooms, which means the rooms are bed-sized and everything is optimized for space.

CityHub Amsterdam is perfectly located in a hip local neighborhood full of yoga studios (bring your own toxic-free mat!) and close to Vondelpark. The true draw to this place is its exceptional comfort and ultra-modern amenities. At check-in, you are given a wristband that will serve as a room key and as a payment method for their self-service bar and coffee shop. You are then assigned to a top or a bottom two-person capsule, with efficient storage space, two bathrobes to use in the very clean and modern bathrooms, an extremely comfy bed, and Bluetooth speakers that you can use to listen to music in the privacy of your soundproof capsule.

Poznań, Poland – Soda Hostel & Apartments

Soda Hostel & Apartments is situated in Jeżyce in hip West Poznań. The hostel is within a stylish and renovated building, with numerous room configurations to suit almost every traveler. There are fully-equipped apartments with en suite bathrooms, private rooms for between 1 and 4 guests, and traditional hostel dorms for budget travelers.

The vibe at Soda Hostel is calm and relaxed. This is great for more reserved travelers looking for a cheap city break or someone exploring Europe on a gap year. The staff are very friendly and give great travel recommendations. Soda is not a party hostel; it’s friendly but without the rowdy nightlife some are known for. Even guests in private rooms can mingle with other guests in common areas and the kitchen.

Getting around Poznań is easy. It’s very walkable, though trams are cheap and there’s a stop just outside the hostel. Soda Hostel is just about a 1-mile walk to Poznań’s Old Market and 0.75 miles from Poznań Główny Train Station. Poznań can also be easily visited on a day trip from Berlin!

There are some hostels you walk into and instantly feel welcome. You can feel the warmth, the charm, and energy of the place and that’s exactly what happens when you walk through the gates of Surfers Den in Ericeira, Portugal.

The charm and energetic vibes flow throughout the hostel and it all stems from the two Italian owners, Federico and Enrique. In all my years of staying in hostels, I’ve never come across owners who go so above and beyond to make you feel as if you’re part of the family. The hostel itself is like being at home: small, cozy, relaxed, and always spotless. If you love to surf, they offer classes and rent boards but even if you don’t surf (like me), it doesn’t matter – it will still feel like home and you’ll still be welcomed into the family. If you’re a non-surfer, this hostel is close to all the other top things to do in Ericeira.

If you’re ever passing through Ericeira, Portugal, I highly recommend this hostel.

Near the Slovakia/Poland border, in the High Tatra Mountains, is Ždiar. You won’t find much in this tiny goral village. A couple of restaurants, a handful of stores, and a man selling hot goulash by the ladle is about all. Well, that and the Ginger Monkey hostel.

Routinely recognized as the best hostel in Slovakia (including the last six-year running), the Ginger Monkey offers a warm reception and a home-away-from-home in their tiny, 20-person lodge. During summer, hike the remarkably beautiful countryside and up into the High Tatras. In winter, some of Europe’s cheapest skiing is right on your doorstep. After a day in the mountains, return to the cozy lodge where the Ginger Monkey’s longest-serving staff member, mascot, and all-around good boy Wally Dogster will be waiting to welcome you home.

Best Hostels in Slovenia

Ljubljana, Slovenia – Hostel Celica

Recommended by Tom & Zi from Craving Adventure

Most of you probably don’t think about spending the night in a prison cell as something fun, but at the Hostel Celica in Ljubljana, that is exactly what it is. The building that is now transformed into this hostel used to be a military prison. The prison cells have all been transformed into hostel rooms but with the bars in front of the windows and doors still in place, and every room is a unique work of art with a minimalistic design.

The hostel has a bar and often organizes great events and live performances. It is an awesome place to meet other people, hang out, and have a drink, but it is definitely not a party hostel. If you do feel like partying, Hostel Celica is located in Ljubljana’s funky art district Metelkova, full of alternative bars and with cool street art everywhere.

It’s easy to navigate this neighborhood and get to other places within the city, and most of all, it’s located in one of the safest neighborhoods in Barcelona as well. The Mountain Hostel is quite literally perched on a mountainside, located in the small town of Gimmelwald in the Swiss Alps. The hostel offers both dorm-style and private rooms, a homey communal kitchen, and a quaint restaurant run by the owners.

What makes this hostel so incredible is its location – 360 degrees of mountain views surround the hostel, so close you can practically touch them. At the Mountain Hostel, you’re a stone’s throw from fantastic hiking trails and the meeting point for paragliding through the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Mountain Hostel is great for meeting friends and chatting over a pint of beer, but it isn’t a party hostel. Instead, visitors go out for hikes or explore the other nearby mountain towns. The Mountain Hostel is a beautiful accommodation, and easily one of the best hostels in Europe.

The hostel has an on-site café. No alcohol is served at the hostel; however, you can bring your own to enjoy in the lounge with your new friends! If you need a bit of help meeting your fellow travelers, the hostel hosts events such as yoga classes, free walking tours, and bar crawls.

If you’re wanting a wonderful budget-friendly hostel in a great neighborhood, this hostel is perfect for you!

Penzance, United Kingdom – EasyPZ Stay

Recommended by Jonny from Guide to Castles

  • Location: 29 Lannoweth Rd, Penzance TR18 3AB, United Kingdom (map)
  • Read reviews on TripAdvisor // Book your stay on HostelWorld

EasyPZ Stay is a great hostel for those looking for a laid-back vibe. Located in Penzance, the hostel has a steady mix of surfers passing through looking to hit up some surf spots, as well as some international travelers coming for stunning coastal walks, castles in Cornwall like the nearby St Michael’s Mount, and other historical places in the area.

It’s a small hostel which makes it very easy to meet a few like-minded travelers, and although it’s certainly not a party hostel, come the evening time a few travelers tend to gather around the kitchen table for some beers and a chat.

Cornwall is one of the best counties for surfing in the UK so it makes a great place to visit if you like that kind of vibe. EasyPZ Stay is a great choice when there for a laid-back atmosphere.

York, England – Safestay York

Recommended by Sinead from Best in York Guide

Safestay York is not your average hostel. This immaculately clean, spacious, and colorful hostel in York is housed in a grand Georgian townhouse on cobbled Micklegate, one of York’s most popular and historic streets.

The friendly hostel offers cozy private rooms and quality family rooms as well as comfortable small and large dorms. There is free WiFi, a useful laundry facility, and a licensed bar on site. Plus, the hostel offers a very affordable breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Safestay York boasts a fantastic location – the hostel is set inside the city’s medieval city walls, a short ten minute walk from York Rail Station and a ten minute walk into the city center.
