When I’m visiting a new city, the first thing I do (after getting to my accommodation and dropping off my luggage, of course) is take a free walking tour of the city. These free walking tours are available all over the world and will cost you little to nothing!

How are companies able to offer these free walking tours?

The guides running these tours work for tips. The standard is usually $5-10 per person, depending on the length and quality of the tour.

While in Amsterdam, I took a free walking tour of the city with FreeDam Tours. This 3-hour tour was a great way to get a feel for the layout and history of Amsterdam while staying on a budget.

At the end of the tour, I tipped my guide 10 Euro as a token of appreciation for the entertaining, informative tour.

Many companies also offer tours that are more specific or in places a little bit farther away from the city. These tours aren’t free, but they’re usually pretty cheap!

For example, I took a tour from Quito to the equator for just $10! This tour included transportation in a comfortable van, a visit to the Museo Intiñan (where the GPS-accurate equator line is), and a stop at the Mitad del Mundo monument. The tour didn’t include entrance fees, but the fee to go into the museum was just about $3. It was optional to go into the Mitad del Mundo monument. The entrance fee there is just $2.

This same company also offered free walking tours of Quito, as well as other fun excursions like a food tour and a bar crawl! Also, if you’re looking for a great & affordable place to stay in Quito, these tours are run out of the Community Hostel, a local hostel with excellent reviews.

While the tours may be free, please make sure to tip your guide (if they’re allowed to accept tips – a few aren’t)!

In addition, some cities aren’t allowed to offer free walking tours, so they may charge a small booking fee (usually no more than $5).
